双头链条在高负载应用中效率更高。其内部宽度上布满凸耳，可防止链条扭结。这种链条常用于重型起重机械。其他类型的链条包括滚子链、动力传动链和衬套滚子链。这些类型的链条也广泛应用于摩托车、自行车和运输领域。除了效率更高之外，带凸耳的链条也比摩擦传动链磨损更少。
一项关于磨损率与摩擦时间差异的研究表明，链轮传动比摩擦传动更高效。试验开始时测量摩擦条的直径，6小时后取下摩擦条，重复10080次，并拍摄直径相同的照片。作为临界值，摩擦条的直径小于传统链条的直径。这表明本发明比摩擦传动具有更好的耐磨性。
